Forklift Winches - A winch is a mechanical device which specializes in winding up or letting out or winding out or pulling in the tension of a wire cable, cable, wire rope or a rope. It its most basic form it is made of a spool with a connected hand crank. More complicated winches are seen at the heart of machines like tow trucks, elevators and steam shovels. Every so often the spool can be known as the winch drum. Complex designs have gear assemblies which can be driven by electric, pneumatic, internal or hydraulic combustion drives. Several winches can comprise a solenoid brake or a mechanical brake or a pawl and ratchet apparatus so as to prevent it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.
Normally, the rope is stored on the winch. There is similar machinery called a capstan which does not store the rope. In sailing, when trimming a line on a sailboat, the crew member works the winch handle utilizing one hand while tailing the other to be able to maintain tension on the turns. Some winches have a stripper or cleat to be able to maintain tension. These designs are called "self-tailing" winches.
Frequently, a winch is utilized in big theatrical shows as a part of the mechanism to transfer setting. Sometimes there are also winches really imbedded in the stage in order to help move the many bigger set pieces off and on the stage.
The new generation of winches have been created for snow and water sports enabling the riders to be pulled rapidly across a body of snow or of water. This could stimulate a riding experience that is typically supplied by a wave runner, boat or a snow mobile.
